The climate of Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) can be described as warm to hot and humid. Being so close to the equator, temperatures are relatively consistent throughout the year. It is very hot from October to April, while it is a bit cooler from June to August. The Wet season occurs from November to May. Many lodges close from April to May.
Dry Season June to October
Most days are full of sunshine in the Dry season. Afternoon temperatures are usually around 29°C/84°F. Nighttime temperatures drop to about 18°C/64°F.
- June, July, August & September – It hardly ever rains and the sky tends to be clear but dusty. It can be chilly on early morning .
- October – The end of October might see the first rains of the Wet season. As the dust settles, the rains will come as a relief after a long period of dry weather.
Wet Season November to May
The Wet season is hot and humid. Afternoon temperatures are usually around 31°C/88°F and it cools down at night to about 21°C/70°F.
- November & December – November is the beginning of the Wet season, although the exact start is hard to predict. Rainfall tends to be occasional and short (mostly in the afternoon) and probably won't hinder your safari.
- January & February – It is further along in the rainy season, and there will be several days with short intervals of rain, usually in the afternoons. Daytime temperatures average close to 31°C/88°F, while nights and early mornings average 21°C/70°F.
- March, April & May – March and April are the wettest months. It rains most days, but usually not for the entire day. The average maximum temperature is usually 30°C/86°F and the minimum 20°C/68°F.
