This is THE place to see rhino .... but you'll see lots more as well!

We've been to Hluhluwe-Umfolozi a few times now and love the scenery and the wildlife. On a couple of occasions we've been held up on the road by two or three big white rhinos which were awfully close and at other times we've seen 12 or more in a single game drive. The bird life has also been wonderful and one time while sitting in a small picnic area we had a leopard wander down the nearby dry river bed.

The accommodation in the hilltop lodge is first class, as is the food.

I'd go back again on our next trip to South Africa, which hopefully wont be too far away!

Many safari destinations, a great variety of parks; from savanna, to montane rain forest. High wildlife densities. Unique animals and chances of observing them.

Review about Selous Game Reserve by Schaapmans
Overall rating

Selous is awesome. You can drive off the road. During a safari day you bump into all vehicles in Selous. That is about 10 4x4's. Make sure you have an awesome driver / guide / tracker. We had the best, tracking down leopard trails as he drove. Few vast plains, more shrub and dense (and dry) vegetation and some lakes. Wildlife is not so much habituated to humans as in other parks. Selous makes Ngorongoro your local European drive through safari zoo. You really track down animals for a true bush vibe and wildlife experience. Unique wildlife as well: wild dogs. Lucky enough to see a rare event in Selous: a leopard with young walking around closeby. Less wildlife density you will observer, but compensated by the awesome experience and unique events.

Review about Serengeti National Park by Schaapmans
Overall rating
4/5

Vast plains, huge concentrations of wildlife. The great migration of course. If you want to see as much as possible, go here. All the big cats, all the undulates. Great landscapes, koppies and oasis like rivers. Downsides are the amount of tourists. You see many vehicles standing around a group of lions or that cheetah.

Completely different to the northern parks of Tanzania

Selous isnt a National Park like the famous Serengeti with all the almost tame animals, therefore its kind of boring or even un-expected in the beginning when you see shy Zebras or Giraffes running away from Safari visitiors even when they are fare away (like 100m and more). But then, you'll end up with a more natural feeling - it's interesting to see big groups of Giraffes running scared ... but the thing I liked at most was that in the Selous you can stop the car, get out, have a walk, picnic or whatever. The drivers go whereever the car is able to go through the bush - and that makes the experience, because you're much closer to animals like Elephants or even the Wild Dogs. In general its not really touristy, so everything feels more like an expected bush adventure. Ah, and for me the flight in small plane was an "adventure" as well. So i'll recommend the Selous (afterwards) in combination with e.g. the Serengeti.

Zim has some fantastic spots, Matusadona, Hwange, Mana Pools, Chimanimani. Some Americans, used to the advertising of a Kenyan or Tanzanian safari, might be a little disappointed, but the connoisseur will be rewarded.

Can only improve with time (review from 2004)

It's an adventure just getting to Lower Zambezi National Park. You must cross the Kafue River on a hand-winched punt and in some places the road and bridges are washed away (floods in 2003). A highlight was the community campsite just outside the park, which was in a wonderful location to relax on the banks of the Zambezi. It was wonderful watching the full moon rise over that great river with the hippos grusting nearby. The sunrise through the door of the tent, just meters above the river was great as well as was the visited by an inquisitive elephant, which Philip the campsite manager expertly dealt with when it got too close. To get into the Park you drive through a river, which can be tricky if the water is high. In 2004 the animals were quite wild and ran from cars on the west side of the park. Further in, near the more expensive lodges, it may not be the case, but it seemed that there must have been poaching going on. Over time hopefully things will improve and Lower Zambezi National Park will be more accessible. It would be great to visit again.

Review about South Luangwa National Park by africadunc
Overall rating
4/5

South Luangwa National Park was fantastic. The road there was in bad condition, but Flat Dogs camp was one of the best camsites ever, right on the river and beautifully maintained and run. Many animals crossed right into the camp and some days we just sat and watched without going into the park itself. We even saw leopard on the park side of the river from camp. Game drives into the park were great.
