a 10 days camping in the parks of Botswana, sleeping in a tent in the middle of the wild, with a good team ready to cope with any situation, and we saw so many animals then. we have been in many different types of safaris since and it remains our best souvenir.

Thrilling Trip for Young and Old!
5/5

While planning a 3-month multi-country trip with my granddaughter, beginning in January, I felt at a loss at where to begin to find a wildlife safari to kick off our trip. Turning to TripAdvisor, I began to read top reviews for Shadows of Africa, so decided to contact them first, expecting to wait a few days for an answer as it was a weekend. The response came within hours from Stacy (in California) and that was the beginning of a beautiful friendship! From then on, all questions and concerns were addressed almost immediately.

Our timing was critical as we needed to be at our first volunteer program within a certain time frame, I wanted to arrive two days early to reduce jet lag, and I wanted to know what would happen after we arrived at an unfamiliar airport. I needn’t have been concerned about any of these things. Stacy assured me that everything could be handled nicely, and she was so right! She made arrangements for us at a clean, comfortable hotel, an airport pickup and drop-off, and made provisions for our extra luggage while we would be on safari. Knowing all that beforehand eliminated a lot of potential travel stress.

As we were checking into the hotel after a morning arrival, we met not only Richard, who would be our guide/driver, but also Natasha, the owner of Shadows of Africa. What a wonderful and personal welcome! We headed to our room shortly after for some much-needed sleep. Richard would be meeting us the following morning for a day tour of Arusha. Stacy had mentioned a possible visit to an orphanage that the company supports, but we hadn’t expected to have the extra day of attention. Richard gave us time at a museum, then strolled the streets of Arusha with us so that we could get a feel for local activity. Even though it took him an hour and a half to drive home, due to Arusha traffic, he wanted us to have a full day. The day included a visit, not only to the orphanage, but also to Natasha’s home for another visit with her. She assured us that we could keep our extra luggage there, which helped us immensely. We felt we were in the hands of friends more than a commercial outfit.

From the time we met Richard, through our day tour, then our 4-day safari, I constantly peppered Richard with questions, not only about the parks, but about life, customs, behaviors, current events, and even personal opinions. Richard always responded graciously, even when felt I was being a nuisance and apologized. Our days were full of wonder as we saw all the beautiful animals, even being within a stone’s toss of 27 elephants crossing in front of us and stared in awe at two magnificent male lions within whispering distance. We saw everything we could have possibly seen. But just as important to me was the chance to exchange thoughts and opinions with Richard, an outstanding host (guide/driver)! The only negative note to the experience was that Godi, our cook, thought we didn’t like his cooking. We could never convince him that our appetites couldn’t handle his overly-generous portions of wonderfully-prepared food.

I have already recommended Shadows of Africa to one of the volunteers at our next destination, and I will continue to do so, every chance I get.

A trip of a lifetime
5/5

It’s been only a little over a week since we’ve departed Tanzania, and already we’re eager to return. We booked a 9-day safari through Tarangire, Ndutu, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater and, from the beginning of plans to the end of the trip, we have been extremely happy with Savannah Explorers, and would highly recommend them to anyone hoping to truly experience the country and all of the riches a safari has to offer.

The trip- Upon first communication, Roberto (one of the owners) was always quick to respond to each and every concern we had. The pricing was far more reasonable than other tour companies were offering, and they had no problem taking on a trip with just the two of us. (Some tours ignore you unless you have a big group to offer). Additionally, wiring money can make anyone a little uncomfortable. However, we always promptly received a receipt after both deposit and final trip payment wires, and our guide was there waiting for us at the airport when we stepped off the plane. Upon arrival, Greyson (the other owner) met us at our lodge and went over all of the details including questions we may have had about tipping, desired beverages in the vehicle, etc.

The accommodations- Were far more than we expected. We stayed in a combination of lodges and tented camps and the latter was by far our favorite. Every night you fell asleep to the sound of the natural surroundings, the staff was always genuinely happy, helpful, and full of energy, and there’s something special about beginning each morning with the beautiful African sunrise and the sight of zebras in the distance.

The vehicle- We’d like to include this because some people have reviewed the vehicle as “old.” The company is utilizing older Land Rovers than many of the other companies. However, do not let this fool you. The vehicle performed just fine, was spacious and always clean, and the fabric canopy used instead of the metal top may have given our guide a little extra work, but provided us far more shade while we viewed wildlife from above.

The guide- We save the best for last. David, our guide, was so amazing we got teary eyed upon departure. He spotted animals from afar that we could only hope to identify with binoculars. He knew the answer to every question we had, of which there were many! While we witnessed other guides appearing bored and texting on their cellphones, David was either searching for more wildlife, informing us on what we were witnessing, or studying up in one of his plant/animal books. He was very patient with us, as we sometimes wanted to spend an extended amount of time staring at say a Mongoose. He took us further away from the crowds in the Serengeti so that we could enjoy animal sightings in peace… the way they should be enjoyed. He also got up before sunrise with us every morning (a preference of our own) to spot wildlife before the start of the day (the best time to really see everything). We’d like to touch on David as a person as well. He is kind, intelligent, and easy to get along with. He not only spotted animals easily, he also had a knack of knowing what they may do next; putting us right where we needed to be while other guides followed the crowd from spot to spot after hearing reports on their radios as if it were a great checklist race. You could tell he didn’t view this as a job but rather a passion. He taught us a lot about the culture of Tanzania and we enjoyed our drives between parks as he informed us of all the “in-betweens.”

This may be a cliché statement, but if you want to be treated like a number, go with the myriad of tour companies you may find in a quick Google search. If you want to enjoy the trip of a lifetime, we believe Savannah Explorers is the best place to start.

Incredible Experience - 6-day Kili summit & 3-day safari
5/5

Wow! We could not be more pleased with our experience with Milestone/Honey Badger. My husband and I were heading to Tanzania from the USA for our honeymoon with aspirations to do a first-class safari and Kilimanjaro summit on a reasonable budget. All of our expectations were surpassed thoroughly and we would recommend Milestone enthusiastically and wholeheartedly! A few specific notes:

- Kili: we chose the 6-day Machame Route hike and were led by Martin & David. They are such a special pair of leaders -- Martin in young, strategic, knows the mountain cold and is a great decision maker as we navigated the mountain. David, who I called "mayor of kili", knows absolutely everyone on the mountain from the caretakers to rescue teams to porters and other guides. He knows every single flower, view, history and he makes the hike a complete and total delight. Additionally - we had our camera on us - he's an amazingly talented photographer and gave us wedding-picture-level documentation of our trip which was totally priceless. We reached the summit successful on the 5th day and were out by the 6th. It was a transformational experience and we were lead by the expertise, professionalism and joyous personalities of our guides.

- Safari: perfect safari. Our guide was George who is excellent, a joy to be around and a great story-teller. We saw 7 rhinos, 24 lions, a cheetah, hundreds of elephants and hippos. We also - given we were on a budget but didn't quite want to camp (after Kili) - were set up with a great deal thanks to Amos who problem-solved with such ease how to make the safari work for us. We stayed at Farakah (?) lodge, a camping site/lodge nestled into a village near the entrance of Mayanara and it was perfect. Our chef, Rama, was one of the best too. His attention to detail -- adding a bit of fresh ginger to the tea water, for example -- was amazing. Top notch food!

- Honeybadger in general: we used honey badger as our home base and it felt like home. It was an amazingly special experience being there -- everything is curated with such care. On top of this, it is a thoughtful and powerful example of social enterprise at work -- using a lodge/travel company in a Moshi village as a catalyst for community development. We were so impressed from top to bottom -- the service was lovely, impeccable; the food was excellent (having traveled in the region before, my expectations were not too high re food, and I was super delighted to find great salads (beet+feta), creative pizzas, inventive cocktails at Honeybadger); the rooms are beautifully designed and simple; and the pool is unbeatable.

All in all: we couldn't rate this experience more highly or enthusiastically and wholeheartedly recommend to anyone looking for a carefully curated, delightful, community-inspired and driven environment to explore Tanzania's many wonders.

We booked our Kilimanjaro climb and three day safari to Serengeti and nogorongoro with Kilidove. George promptly responded over 100 emails we sent with questions, comments and changes. When we arrived we were always introduced to our guides And information clearly passed down and explained to us.

Excellent! beyond my expectations!!!
5/5

When you arrive in Arusha with endless number of Safari companies...you are lost in chaos! I suppose i was very lucky to find Meru Treks. Ibrahim was so informative and honest and after 1/2HR i was convinced to take a 4 Day Safari with another 2 people. If i knew there quality i would take 5 or 6 Days!
Day 1 TARANGIRE NP was fantastic with beautiful landscapes and close up views of animals. Tarangire River provide some fantastic views of Elephants. Staying at night in Panorama Camp was an experience by itself! Cleanness,Service,Views...all perfect!
Day 2 SERENGETI NP a long drive to the Gate but it pays you well after you start a Game Drive through the endless planes. Our driver Omani was super! we spot all Big 7 in the Park! Afternoon Game Drive finished at 7pm at Seronera Campsite. Another lovely meal prepared by Marcus our excellent chef and sleep with the sound of a rain!
Day 3 The night rain clears the  atmosphere so when we start our 6:30 am Game Drive is was very fresh and clear.Highlight of the morning was the spotting of a Cheetah. 11 am back to the Campsite for a Branch and then Game drive out of Serengeti at 3pm and then drive to Simba Campsite .
Day 4 6am early drive to Ngorongoro Gate and descend to the Crater for an unforgettable Game Drive at the floor of the word biggest Crater. We started with Lions and finish with Rhinos! In the meanwhile: Elephant,Buffalo, Zebra, hippo, hyena, jackal, ostrich, gazelle etc...After a lovely breakfast by a Hippo Lake we drive back to the Camp for Lunch. An Elephant pay us a visit just before we left, what a perfect way to end our great experience!
Fantastic people and fantastic Safari. Thank you all!!!
