Wildlife viewing is always good in Kgalagadi but at its best at the end of the rains (March to May) when animals congregate around the riverbeds. This makes for easier sightings. However, Kgalagadi gets extremely hot during summer – the cooler winter months (May to September) are the most pleasant.

Best Time March to May (End of the Wet season when the riverbeds attract animals)
High Season Never (The park never gets crowded but might be busier during school holidays)
Low Season Never (The park never gets crowded)
Best Weather May to September (Less hot during the day)
Worst Weather November to February (Very hot)

May to September Dry Season – Winter

  • Warm, mild weather
  • May is a great month for wildlife viewing
  • Warm clothes are needed for the morning and evening chill
  • The sky is hazy with a lot of dust in the air

October to April Wet Season – Summer

  • The landscape is gorgeous, and summer flowers appear after the first rains
  • End of the Wet season is the best time for wildlife viewing
  • There are newborn animals around, attracting predators
  • The best time for birding because migrant species are present
