Very friendly but driving too fast, elaborating too much on information that's not interesting.
Lamps was very kind and friendly, but we felt like he was elaborating too much on information that most tourists on the vehicle did not find interesting. Our suggestion would be for hom as a tour operator to ask what the tourists are interested in (e.g. big game, birdwatching, etc) before starting the tour to cater for their specific interests, instead of focusing for example on history when no one is interested in it.
He spoke a lot and provided a lot of information on each animal, but didn't provide time to take in the animals in silence and have the whole experience.
He was also speeding through on the dirt roads and swerving out for animal and car tracks which made a very bumpy ride for all tourists on the vehicle.

Good but room for improvement
Overall pleased with our booking, but we experienced some minor conveniences.
For our first sunset drive, we got picked up about 1 hour late. And also, some of us chose to do the optional sunrise game drive the last day, which according to the program were supposed to be in Kruger. Instead we went to the same reserve as we visited the first night, which was a bit disappointing.
All our guides were attentive and listened to our preferences. Our Kruger guide, Lambs, made an extra effort for us to get to see the lions. We would highly recommend him.
The timbavati safari lodge was authentic , and we enjoyed our stay there. The food was good and the staff were friendly and very helpful.

Everything was good organised.
Sometimes it could be better explained what we are doing and what’s happening next. Also it would be nice when we arrived to get a quick change but there was no time for…we hat to get quickly to our safari. All in all ist was a nice time there. The service was good und the people are friendly.

Arranged relatively smoothly
The safari and lodge were excellent. I would highly recommend Umkumbe Lodge. The tour company staff lacked attention to detail and customer care (forgetting to send vouchers among othe things). The itinerary I was given before the trip was slightly off by 30 min here and there and things weren't well communicated all the time. However, overall we had an amazing experience and everything worked out!

Good trip
Nice trip, but tell the driver in the park to don't focus only in the famous big 5. For european, even a small coloured bird, strange rat , zebra, antelope, is amazing!

Experienced and knowledgeable driver
Unfortunately the weather was awful, we experienced a lot of rain, and see very little amounts of animals. The safari driver was very experienced and knowledgeable.
I would suggest visiting another national parks instead.
Marketing team is annoying and harassing for reviews. Wouldn’t let go.

Gustaf was a great guide!
Guataf was our guide and he was very knowledgeable and entertaining. One of the people in the same car as us was quite demanding but Gustaf was very patient with him.
Was quite bummed that we didn’t get to see any of the big cats though.

Worthy experience
My best friend and I booked a Pilensberg day-trip via GetYourGuide 3 days before going, for 128€ per person.
Our pick up spot and time was at the @SandtonHotel at 6:00 AM. We didn’t stay at the hotel, so we had to choose it as a common pick up spot. We arrived at 5:56 and were told by the reception that the driver came at 5:45 and left a couple of minutes later. The reception had to contact the driver’s boss on our behalf so he could return to pick us up… We then enjoyed an eventless ride to a gas station after 1h for a break and finally to the reserve.
The morning “game” was good, it lasted close to 3 hours. We saw hippos, rhinos, elephants, zebras but no cats.
Lunch was good, and part of the package. Beef burger + a soda, it was good and served in a nice spot on the reserve.
The afternoon “game” was more disappointing, as it only lasted 1h25min, and for a long while, animals were hidden. We ended up seeing the same animals as in the morning + a giraffe up close. Still no cats.
Although nobody can control animals’ behaviors, the afternoon game felt rushed. I wish it lasted longer to increase chances to see rarer animals and enjoy the nature.
Desmond was a great guide, really funny and knowledgeable, with whom we felt in good hands.

Dear Jean,
Thank you for your thoughtful review and for sharing your Pilanesberg day-trip experience with us on Safaribookings.com.
We’re sorry for the confusion at pickup. While we collect from all hotels in Gauteng, GetYourGuide lists only select pickup points. Our driver arrived at @SandtonHotel at 5:45 AM and, not seeing you, proceeded with other Sandton pickups to stay on schedule. We regret any inconvenience this caused and appreciate the hotel’s help in ensuring you were picked up.
Regarding the game drives, our full-day Pilanesberg safari includes approximately 6 hours inside the park, with 4.5 to 5 hours of game viewing and a 1 to 1.5-hour lunch break. The morning drive typically lasts around 3.5 hours, while the afternoon drive is shorter, about 1.5 hours. This structure maximizes animal sightings, as mornings are cooler and animals are more active, whereas afternoons can be hotter, with animals often seeking shade. We’re sorry the afternoon felt rushed—we’ll ensure our guides clarify this difference upfront to set clear expectations.
We’re thrilled you enjoyed the morning drive, spotting hippos, rhinos, elephants, zebras, and a giraffe up close, as well as the lunch at the reserve. While we can’t control animal behavior, we understand the hope to see rarer animals like cats.
It was wonderful to hear your kind words about Desmond’s humor and knowledge—thank you for highlighting his great work!
Thank you again for choosing us and for your support. We wish you the best on the rest of your travels and hope to welcome you and your friend back for another adventure.
Warm regards
Anthony

Nice and easy, with good planning
Very nice «package» where everything is planned for you. Very nice length, and perfect because you are never bored because the days are full of activities already planned for you.
