Safety
Zanzibar is generally considered to be a safe destination. Violent crime is highly unusual and most visitors experience no safety issues at all. Pickpocketing and other petty theft are uncommon but possible in Stone Town and other crowded areas, so be alert and avoid carrying valuables. After dark, it is advisable not to walk alone in towns or on beaches.
Bear in mind that Zanzibar is largely Muslim and somewhat culturally conservative. Allowances are made for tourists, but it is still advisable and respectful to dress modestly away from the beach.

Malaria & Vaccinations
In recent years, the prevalence of malaria has decreased dramatically thanks to the largely successful Zanzibar Malaria Elimination Programme (ZAMEP), but occasional outbreaks still occur. Protect yourself against mosquito bites by wearing long trousers, socks and closed shoes after dark, applying insect repellent containing DEET, and sleeping under a net. Antimalarial medication is strongly recommended, and you should also contact your doctor or a travel clinic regarding other vaccinations.
