How To Get to Zanzibar– By Plane or Ferry

Zanzibar Tours Tanzania
Map of Tanzania Tanzania Map

Zanzibar is an Indian Ocean island situated about 50km/31mi northeast of the city of Dar es Salaam on the Tanzanian mainland. International and domestic flights land at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), which lies in Zanzibar City, 7km/4mi from Stone Town. If you’re on a tour, the operator should handle your airport transfer. Alternatively, most hotels can arrange airport collection, and taxis are available.

Many visitors to Zanzibar route through Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam. This is a convenient option for those combining a Zanzibar holiday with a safari to southern Tanzania. Domestic flights between Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar take about 15 minutes, and an efficient ferry service is also available.

Many people tag Zanzibar onto a safari to Serengeti National Park or elsewhere in northern Tanzania. In this case, you would most likely fly into the country at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), 50km/31km east of the town of Arusha, and then take one of the regular domestic flights that connect this airport, as well as Arusha Airport (ARK) and the region’s main parks, to Zanzibar.
