My only disappointment comes from the specific tour/safari operator who didn’t meet my expectations

The Trip of a Lifetime, But There are Some Things to Know Before You Go

The Good:
My wife and I had an amazing time in the Maasai Mara and surrounding area. The wildlife was abundant, the landscape beautiful, and the local Masai people are very friendly. It was the trip of a lifetime, and as a photographer I couldn't be happier at the images I was able to get. Believe me when I say that the good outweighs the bad and the ugly, which are commented on below. I highly recommend a trip to Kenya, but the comments below are just to give a realistic picture regarding some of the challenges you can expect.

The Bad:
The main drawback is that it can feel overwhelming when you are approached by so many people trying to sell merchandise every time your vehicle stops when you are outside the game reserve. Also, keep in mind that there are no services near the game reserve for pulling out cash. Even our lodge did not have an ATM. Even if there were an ATM, I found out later that my ATM card will not work in Kenya, as my US bank refuses to
Read more do business in the country. Also, the lodge could not break larger bills in American dollars. So bring enough small bills for tips, which you will need everywhere.

The Ugly:
For someone who has not been to an underdeveloped country, the extreme poverty can be a bit jolting. My wife and I have traveled extensively, so we knew what to expect. But with extreme poverty comes the need for security when you are a tourist. We stayed overnight in Nyrobi before heading out to the game reserve and I've never seen so much security screening required just to enter the hotel property. The vehicle was searched by security staff. Then to enter the hotel you go thru TSA style security with bags being scanned and stepping thru a scanner. You can't access the elevator or even the hallway to your room without a key card. That is good for our protection, but sad to see it as being necessary due to criminal elements in the city. We never felt unsafe outside the hotel as long as we were with our guide. However, we would have felt very unsafe without him.

Kenya safari 2025

My wife and I visited it for safari game drives. We organized the entire vacation ourselves through online bookings. We traveled the whole country from Mombasa to Masai Mara. We spent two days in the capital Nairobi from here we visited the Naivasha Lake with hippos and many animals. In Nairobi we had booked a 3 day safari game drive to Masai Mara via Toto Tembo Safaris. Masai Mara was the greatest experience and exceeded all our expectations. We saw 4 animals of BIG FIVE, great migration, Mara river with hippos and crocos, Masai village with Goerge and his family :) .... big, big experiences. Finally, we spent a week at Diani Beach. In one sentence, Kenya is a diverse country with nice people (Hakuna Matata, Jambo Rafiki). We had a one negative perception of the constantly annoying locals, who pestered us with their offers at every turn... but it is the true Africa.

Kenya sure is a great country to visit. From hand feeding giraffes at the conservatory in Nairobi to spotting cheetah in the wilderness of Maasai Mara and petting baby elephants at the elephant orphanage it has something for everyone. Definitely a once in a lifetime kind of experience.
Highly recommended.

Mixture of fantastic and development

The holiday in Kenya was very good. Yes, the poor areas are still to be seen at certain places. However, the people were very kind in general and we had a beautiful time. Our safari was fantastic. The wildlife was there and we enjoyed seeing them so close in front of us. We visited several hotels to enjoy the beach scenery which was good and with some even very good with entertainment at night. Personally I would not wander around at night, but with the several; taxi option its perfect to go out for dinner anywhere.

My partner and I traveled to Kenya for 10 days in May 2025. It is a low season, so we really enjoyed exploring the National Parks without the crowds. We got the chance to see many amazing animals up close, but unfortunately (for me at least), cats sightings were very limited - we only saw one leopard that was hiding in a tree for a while and then ran away, cheethas that were too far away to actually see them and two lions in the bushes - also not very visible. That aside, we saw hundreds of zebras, giraffes, hippos, elephants, and monkeys. We were also lucky to see rhinos up close and got to feed giraffes in the Giraffe Center in Nairobi. We spend almost all of our time exploring the National Parks and visited the Masai Mara, Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Hell's Gate, Lake Naivasha, and Nairobi National Park. Our personal favorite was Lake Nakuru because the scenery there is just so amazing - the lake, the forest, everything was so magical! We also got to visit a Masai village but that wasn't
Read more really as interesting as I was expecting - it seems that those experiences had turned into a tourist trap; you do get to learn a little about them and being shown some of their daily life, but most of the time they are trying to sell you something and are showing you thing that people in the village have made (and I'm not sure how true is that as those were the exact same things you can buy in every souvenir shop). After I told the guy that we are not interested in shopping and this isn't the reason why we have come to see the village, our tour finished.

Kenya for me was a beautiful experience when it comes to wildlife and scenery. I had a nice safaritrip with my son in may 2025. I have been there before during the high season but to be honest was this trip even better because of the green nature and to see the wildlife in a More natural way. The scenery was incredible due to the climate also. Not to crowded was also a plus. Ove

Fascinating Destination

We went on a shoulder month with uncertainty of encountering the big five and wonderful view, but we were rewarded with the best sighting. Our guide from Karibu Safaris had been very determined and with some luck we managed to seen all. The comfort level accommodation is good too, we didn't encounter any issue, food provided is fairly decent. It had been a most fulfilling trip, and will definitely recommend to friends and family.

Ideal destination for wildlife watching

National parks enable watching a wide variety of animal species in its natural environment.
Though, parkentrance fees are quite expensive, but it helps preserving the wildlife.
