South Africa Map
Mapungubwe National Park has a remote location in Limpopo, South Africa’s most northerly province. Mainly a destination, it borders Botswana and Zimbabwe, 75km/47mi west of Musina, Limpopo’s northernmost town, and 520km/323mi north of Johannesburg.
Most visitors to South Africa arrive at Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB), where you can rent a car and drive to Mapungubwe (allow at least 6 hours*). You can explore the park’s main 35km/21mi road network in any car, but another 100km/62mi of internal roads are accessible to 4x4 vehicles only.
It’s possible to fly from O.R. Tambo to Polokwane International Airport (PTG), which stands on the outskirts of Limpopo’s capital Polokwane, 215km/134mi (3 hours’ drive*) from Mapungubwe. However, car rentals in Polokwane are relatively expensive.
*Driving times are only a rough indication. You should always consider the possibility of significant delays.
