If you want to see Lions, elephants, hippos, crocs against a beautiful african backdrop, this is your place. It isn't particularly easy to travel through independently (i.e. get there by bus etc), but certainly possible. Once there hiring a local guide is the best thing to do. We caught a taxi to Katunguru, then hired a guide called Mustafa (who is well known in the area, and is listed in the Bradt travel guide). He was fantastic, would very much recommend going with him.

Nairobi National Park was an interesting surprise. Being located in Nairobi, I wasn't expecting too much, but the area, the scenary and the quantity of wildlife surprised by the positive side. Being able to see rhinos was a very positive one, and for a birder, the quantity of amazing birds was a must.
If one has short time and/or are limited in traveling, this park can give a very good wildlife safari experience.

200 Elephants Per Day

I spent a lot of time choosing our Tanazanian safari destination. I wanted something exceptional, inexpensive, with a taste of adventure (not tourist traps). I found that the best places for that are Katavi and Ruaha. But the first one is really far from Dar. So decision was quite easy eventually. Ruaha is really beautiful place, with landscape full of hills and baobab trees. Great Ruaha river is full of animals in dry season. We saw in one day more then 200 hundred elephants, one hundred giraffes, and many other animals (lions, udu, zebras, hippos etc.). We met just one car during one day. I can recommend Ruaha for everyone who wants taste real safari adventure. I felt we were first visitors there.

Ithala Game Reserve, located in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa, has always been one of my favourite safari destinations in southern Africa. It's quite well populated with a large wildlife variety. However, I could never spot any elephants despite seeing their fresh droppings on the road. I first visited the park in 1985 and became addicted to it. Although most of the roads within the park area dirt roads, driving even in small cars does not pose major problems. Stunning views are there to please your eyes in almost every turn. Pic-nic sites can be easily found and are appropriately sign posted. Quality accommodation, restaurant, bar and game drives are available. Therefore, As visiting Ithala Game Reserve is a must. I highly recommend it to all nature lovers.

Great Scenic beauty, but not as good as other parks for wildlife. Also, a lot of people day tripping. Doesn't have the bush vibe of the other parks.
