About: Mozambique
an easy and rewarding trip to Maputo Special Reserve
Overall rating
4/5

The Maputo Special Reserve is an important link in the regional wildlife conservation efforts and great efforts have been made to re-establish wildlife, virtually extinct after the civil war, and infrastructure. The combination of the shore with beaches and the park with ist wildlife make it especially attractive. There are resorts and campsites and one finds many weekend/holiday visitors from SA with their boats and tents.
Our visit was a short one from Maputo in between work, on a Saturday. Arranged by the owner of our bed and breakfast with her own 4WD. Costs were US$ 200 for the two of us, including park entrance fee. Renting a vehicle or have a travel agency do the trip will be more expensive. A 4WD is needed, the area is mostly very sandy and a normal vehicle will get stuck in no time and isn't allowed in the park. The new Maputo-Katembe bridge (opened end of 2018) and the completely renewed road from Maputo south to Punta de Ouro and the SA border make that the trip from Maputo to the park entrance only takes just over an hour. We spent some two and a half hours in the park, mainly driving to the Lagoa Chinguto, the largest lake in the park. On this short trip, we saw elephants, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hippo's, impala, southern reedbuck, natal duiker, greater kudu and crocodiles. Birds were abundant, especially waterfowl with both resident and migrant species: spoonbills, yellow-billed stork, egrets, herons, various terns and waders.
The park is espcially interesting for those with little time to spend but still want to see wildlife, and for those who have more time to spend and combine a beach-park-camping/lodging trip.

Wildlife is amazing!
The weather in December was much hotter that I expected. Food in lodges are amazing. People are friendly and kind. We always felt safe (family with 1 kid), not just in the lodges but when we wandered around alone in the villages (we used public taxis too).
Roads are dirty so transportation is slow.
Our guide was really helpful, creative in problem solving, getting along with my kid very well, educated and well informed.

What a good experience!
5/5

Me and my girlfriend went to ngorongoro and tarangine. What amn amazing 3 day experience.
First day they pick us at Kilimanjaro airport. The flight was delayed 2 hours bit they waited with a smile!

The acommodation was so nice, a clean room. They cooked for us even if it was later In the night :)

Then the dream... second day: they took us to the beggining of the safari. We met magic Mike... And trust me... he is an amazing Guide...

Se saw so many animals in tarangire... we lunch the safari lunchboxes. later we slept in an fancy camping, near ngorongoro, and before we went to see a house of the massai tribe.

The second day... ngorongoro. We saw the lions at 1 meter of us...the lake was full, so all the animals were there, except the leopard, maybe in another time, it is a nature's decision.
Then they provided transportation for us back to royal lodge in arusha...

Then, at 5 am... they prepared us a delicious breakfast and took us to the airport.

Everything went well, the communications were perfect and now they are our friends. Thank u guys, all of u rock!

This is a scam operation - please avoid
1/5

I am truly sorry for not writing this review before as I can see that others have had the same experience as me. I paid them $1000 up front and when Ken met me in Rwanda he told me that they had made a mistake and bought the gorilla permit for the wrong day. Also - since this was a weekend, the banks were closed and they didn't carry that much cash on them. So he requested me to put up the money for a new permit and he would refund me the money later. What choice did I have? I was then taken to the Uganda border and more or less left on my own.

Of course - no money was ready when I returned, and no money was deposited to my account when I got home either. After several weeks of mailing back and forth I contacted the guys behind the site for which the safari was booked. They were very helpful and leaned on CDS so they eventually refunded my money. See - they depend on these sites as the money flow comes through here. If you paid directly to them - God help you. Or - the credit card company may be able to help.

Even with my harrowing experience I wanted to give them the benefit of my doubt as I don't want to take away the livelihood from people, but after reading these reviews I'm certain that these are bad guys that you should just definitely avoid at all costs.

Unforgettable experience
5/5

I did the 4 days + 3 nights safari (Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro). The Ngorongoro crater is so beautiful! The safari was well organized and the guide, Lucas, made an effort to make sure we got to see as much as possible. The first night we slept in a very correct lodge and the other two nights in a tent (campsites with very basic services and cold water showers). The food was good and varied. I was traveling alone and I had to share a room and a tent. It wasn't a problem because I was lucky enough to have a very nice group, but I think this is something that should be mentioned beforehand.

5/5

This tour was nothing short of amazing! Mawingu was the perfect tour guide and really made this, a trip of a lifetime for our family. We felt safe and everything was well organised. I cannot reccomend them enough! We saw breathtaking landscapes and the wildlife was unreal. More than we could have hoped for. Ngorongoro Crater was my absolute favourite. We would definetley do a tour with them again.

Cross motorbike day Tanzania
5/5

"AMAZING. I'd expect this was going to be a great experience but this day exceeded my expectations enormously.

First of all, even though the company is based in Arusha, and my Bed & Breakfast is in Moshi, this was not a problem for Twaleeb. They just brought the bike to Moshi, included in the price!!

But then the day starts: Words can't describe what I've seen today, pics can not show, because it's too much. I feel like I've made a motorbike journey of a year in one day... Every kind of landscape you can imagine, I rode it today.
In this motorbike trip you'll see so many things which you won't see when you're in a car or walking. For example you even ride through villages where not even a car can come and which is way to far for walking.

Many thanks to Twaleeb for this experience and to Alphy and Moi for the excellent guidance. They'll adjust completely to your skill level. If you want to speed up, they give you all the freedom to do it, or if you want to slow down, stop to eat something or take a picture, you have total freedom! This experience will stay with me for the rest of my life!"
