Category: Amazing Wildlife Encounters

All three of my meetings with wild gorillas are among the best wildlife encounters in my life.

You probably already know this, but if you have the chance to go see gorillas in the wild, do it. I've encountered wild gorillas three times so far – two planned visits with habituated troops and one lucky non-habituated encounter – and the second and third were just as amazing as the first.

This is not something I can say about any other animal I've encountered in Africa or elsewhere. Mostly what makes the experience so special is that you don't just see gorillas, you meet them.

Though the gorillas are certainly less excited about the meetings than the humans, they do have a genuine curiosity about their visitors and some will approach close and take a seat to watch us watch them.
