Category: Sustainable Lodge of the week

Singita Pamushana Lodge sits perched atop a picturesque rocky koppie in the 60,000ha Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve in southeastern Zimbabwe. The reserve is a haven for rare and endangered species.

Despite its six-star luxurious safari offerings, multiple rim-flow pools and lavish comfort, Singita Pamushana has an unwavering sustainability ethos at the heart of its conservation and community outreach programmes. The Malilangwe Trust was established to provide an elementary level of food and water security to both the local wildlife and neighbouring peasant farmers – highly necessary in an area perennially prone to poor rains.

During the last serious drought, the Trust was responsible for feeding upwards of 23,000 schoolchildren everyday! Clean drinking water provision, crop irrigation schemes, education bursaries and HIV/AIDS awareness cover just a few of the many initiatives undertaken as part of Pamushana’s commitment to uplifting its neighbouring communities and safeguarding the reserve’s previously threatened wildlife.

In weighing up the relatively carbon-heavy lodge operations against the invaluable community and conservation work being done by Singita Pamushana, the sustainability value of the former far outweighed the human footprint of the latter. As such, Singita Pamushana was selected by David Bristow and Colin Bell amongst the top 50 sustainable safari operations on the continent, and included in their exquisite coffee table book: Africa’s Finest.
