Meru National Park in Kenya is the setting for world renowned Elsa’s Kopje: a place inextricably linked to the Born Free movie which portrayed George and Joy Adamson raising, rehabilitating and releasing lions back into the wild here.

Elsa was the most famous of their felines. The lodge was a pioneer of the green movement in Kenya and is fitted throughout with solar water-heaters. Cooking is done on gas and most of the lodge’s power now comes from solar inverters with the generator in the final stages of being phased out.

Plans are also afoot to introduce a waste-water management system that sends all used water through a series of grease traps and filters before releasing it into a nearby waterhole for thirsty wildlife or using it to irrigate the lodge’s gardens.

Over time, the eco-model pioneered by Elsa’s Kopje has become a blueprint for deluxe, green safari lodge design in Kenya, resulting in the lodge’s inclusion by David Bristow and Colin Bell in Africa’s Finest. This magnificent coffee table book recognises Elsa’s Kopje as one of Africa’s top 50 sustainable safari operations from amidst the ocean of eco-pirates and green-pretenders that characterise much of the African safari industry.
