Leave Tanzania’s famous north for another time, and head south for the scenery, wildlife and lack of crowds.

Tanzania’s southern parks – primarily Selous and Ruaha – are fabulous destinations. While not exactly a ‘secret’ these days, they are often bypassed in favour of the more straightforward northern circuit. While wildlife in the south isn’t as accessible as in the north, it is present in huge numbers.

The scenery in both areas is also outstanding – Selous with its greenery and the massive, hippo-filled Rufiji River, Ruaha with its ancient baobabs and huge elephant population. A good choice of intimate, upmarket lodges is another draw of the south.

I especially recommend either Selous or Ruaha to anyone on a repeat safari looking for a different experience.
