Romantic Safari for Lovers

Do wild animals, wild landscapes and a dark continent make a recipe for romance? Alan gives advice on getting the best romantic safari experiences from your time on safari.

Africa & Romance

Can an African safari really be romantic? Oh yes, it certainly can! At times when I have been on safari I have had some of my most romantic moments. Such as in Kafue National Park in Zambia, sitting in a lodge overlooking the vast Kafue River, sun going down, candle twinkling on the table. Just a shame it was my male travel partner opposite me and not my wife…

Actually, something as simple as sleeping under the stars on a bedroll can be an incredibly romantic experience on this continent. The sounds of the African bush all around you. Above you, a kaleidoscope of stars with their ethereal light dancing across the sky.

Of course you need to be careful where you do this and I would strongly advise not near a river. There is nothing like a three-tonne hippo snuffling around your ankles to snuff out any budding romance.

Ramping Up the Luxury Factor

If you want to ramp up the luxury factor, one of my favourite romantic escapes is Likoma Island in Lake Malawi. The resort here is something special. Cottages are hewn from the rock overlooking private areas of crystal clear lake water. Outside showers too…very sexy. Your hosts here will even organise candlelit dining on the beach at night.

Singita Sabora tented camp in Tanzania is another favourite. It’s set up like an early 20th century explorer’s camp and is dripping in character and romance inside. What a wonderful way to experience the great plains of Africa and the greatest migration on Earth…

Just picture it…a bubble bath on your private safari deck… glass of sparkling wine in hand of course. Wow…that could earn you a lot of brownie points. Safaris and love, what a beautiful combination!

Trains & Balloons

Or, if you like your train journeys, you could give Rovos Rail a try. Based mainly in South Africa but penetrating Namibia and winding its way to Vic Falls too, this is luxury train travel at its decadent best. There is something completely indulgent about these classic wood panelled coaches. Rail travel was the epitome of high-class journeys before jet engines. And these trips really transport you to a bygone era.

If you prefer floating to railway tracks you could always try a sunrise balloon ride over the plains, spotting wildlife, and gasping at the majesty of the African savannah at first light. An experience you and a loved one are sure never to forget.

Africa is made for romance and for romantics. The landscapes, the interaction of the wildlife in their natural environment…it may even spur a proposal or two…
