Between 1905 and 1930, it was repurposed as a terminal for a railway line to the town of Bububu. The building fell into disrepair after the 1964 Revolution. Following extensive renovations in 1997, it is now a cultural center and the focal point of the annual Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF).
